There is a COVID-19 outbreak at a McDowell County correctional facility.
Gov. Jim Justice reported Wednesday during his coronavirus media briefing that 38 inmates and 11 staff members at the Stevens Correctional Center in Welch have tested positive for the virus.
Isolation and testing are underway, but Justice said he expected more positive cases.
The governor said the National Guard is on standby and will begin sanitizing once the outbreak has been isolated and the scope of the infection is known.
Justice reported outside of the Stevens outbreak, the state Division of Corrections has six other inmates and 34 other staff members across the state who currently are positive with the virus.
