Morgantown man charged with assault on officer that died following Capitol riot


A Morgantown man has been arrested in connection with assault of three United States Capitol Police officers with bear repellant during the January sixth riot.


Thirty-nine-year-old George Pierre Tanios was arrested Sunday. A second suspect, 32-year-old Julian Elie Khater from Penn., was also charged.


Tanios is the operator of "Sandwich University," a sandwich shop in Morgantown.


Capitol Police officer Brian D. Sicknick was among the officers alleged to have been assaulted Sicknick died the day following the riot. Authorities have not determined if the spray contributed to his death.


As first reported by the Washington Times, both men are charged with nine counts. Charges include assault on an officer, civil disorder and obstructing a congressional proceeding.


If convicted of the alleged crimes, suspects face up to 20 years in prison.
