CHAPMANVILLE A Logan County man is behind bars after an infant was injured during an alleged domestic incident last week.

West Virginia State Police arrested 26-year-old Charles Sheppard of Chapmanville on Friday on multiple charges.

Troopers responded to a residence on Fillinger Drive in the Upper Crawley Creek area, where they found a one-year-old child with injuries to the left eye, neck and arm. Investigators allege Sheppard and his girlfriend were involved in a physical altercation, during which Sheppard punched and choked the infant.

The victim was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Sheppard is charged with felony Strangulation, Suffocation, or Asphyxiation, and felony Child Abuse by a Parent, Guardian or Custodian, or Person in Position of Trust Causing Serious Bodily Injury. He's also charged with one misdemeanor count of Domestic Battery.

He is being held at Southwestern Regional Jail on a combined cash-only bond of $505,000, according to Logan County Magistrate Court records.

The investigation into the incident remains ongoing.
