CHAPMANVILLE A year after putting together the best regular season in
program history, the Chapmanville Tigers will begin the 2026 football season
with something they did not have a year ago: a target on their backs.
Chapmanville finished the 2025 regular season unbeaten, setting a school

West Virginia is mourning the loss of one of its most enduring
figures.
Willie Akers, the legendary Logan High School basketball coach who turned
the Wildcats into one of the state’s premier programs, passed away Tuesday
at the age of 89.
For generations of Logan players and fans, Akers was more than a coach. He
became synonymous with winning basketball, hard work and the
unmistakable blue-and-gold pride of Logan High School.

Logan County Schedule Preview: Same schedule, same expectations for Wildcats in 2026
Coming off an impressive 8-3 season and a Class AA playoff berth,
the Logan High School Wildcats will enter the new season with the same
schedule and same expectations as a season ago.
The same 10 teams that the Wildcats played last season are back on this
year’s schedule for the 2026 season that saw the Wildcats win their first six
games of the season, finish the regular season 8-2, earning a 12 th place finish
in the final West Virginia Secondary School Activities

Free sports physicals available at Boone Memorial Health
With the upcoming sports season approaching, Boone Memorial Health is helping local athletes prepare with free sports physicals.
The physicals are available without an appointment, and walk-ins are welcome through August 31st.
Sports physicals are offered Tuesdays at the BMH Comfort Clinic from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. They are also available Saturdays at the BMH Danville Clinic from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
Athletes under the age of 18 will need parental consent.

The Chapmanville Tigers dominated a tri-match Wednesday at Little Creek Country Club, placing four golfers in the top five and beating Sissonville by 34 shots. Chapmanville golf competes in WV Army National Guard WVGA Invite
One of 29 schools competing, Chapmanville led by sophomore Cooper
Evans, who shot a 23-over 95, carded a team total of 302 finishing in a 26 th
place tie with Greater Beckley Christian.
Junior Zeke Tiller had the next lowest round for the Tigers with a round of 100.
Sophomore Nate Farley fired a round of 107 and senior Colton Thompson
added a round of 109 for Chapmanville.

Logan golf opens with tri-match win over St. Albans, Riverside
The Logan High School golf team opened the
season Wednesday afternoon with a season opening win in a tri-match at the
Little Creek Country Club.
Logan’s Alton Ellis topped the leader board firing a low round of 42 to claim
individual medalist honors and led Logan to an eight-shot win over St. Albans
and Riverside.

Bella Segars hit a tiebreaking sacrifice fly in the fifth
inning scored Willow Morgan as Hart County (Georgia) Senior League edged
the Logan Senior League 2-1 Monday afternoon in the Senior League Softball

Johnson, who allowed one unearned run on six hits and two walks, picked up
her second win in the circle to advance Logan to the Final Four of the
Southeast Regional. She also had two hits and scored one run.
Logan will face St. Bethlehem (Tennessee) Senior League at 6:30 p.m.
Sunday with the winner advancing to Monday’s championship round at 11:00

Kolovich, Blankenship carry Chapmanville Little Leaguepast Logan Little League in 8-10 Softball State Tournament
With the win, Chapmanville avenged an earlier defeat to Logan, 9-0, in the
West Virginia Little League District 2 8-10 Softball Tournament on June 21.
The victory also advances Chapmanville into Wednesday’s state
championship game against the Barboursville Little League, who defeated
South Berkeley, 11-0, in the second semifinal on Tuesday.
