LOGAN The City of Logan has completed its downtown smart parking meter upgrade.

City officials told council during the July 14 meeting that 50 new smart parking meters were installed throughout downtown on July 8.

Fire Chief Scott Beckett said CivicSmart completed the installation in about half a day by replacing the technology inside the existing meter housings rather than installing entirely new units, leaving the appearance of the existing meters largely unchanged.

Council approved the purchase of the new single-space meters from CivicSmart in January. The upgrades cover about 100 downtown parking spaces and add features including tap-to-pay, credit card payments, QR codes and continued coin acceptance. Officials said the system also allows for future electronic payment options without requiring a smartphone app.

The update builds on an ordinance that took effect in May 2025 establishing a two-hour limit at metered downtown parking spaces. Council members said the change was intended, in part, to discourage employees from occupying spaces near the Logan County Courthouse throughout the workday, improving parking availability for nearby businesses.

The new system also allows city police to track when ticketed vehicles move between metered spaces. Using a handheld device, officers can record transactions and citations digitally instead of relying on paper citation envelopes.
