Tigers erase Dots with seven-run sixth inning

POCA Three walks, three hit batters and three singles led to seven sixth inning runs as Chapmanville defeated Poca 11-1 in six innings Saturday morning at Poca High School.


The victory was the second in a row and fourth in five games for the Tigers, who completed a season sweep of the Poca Dots.


Leading 4-1 after five innings, the Tigers took advantage of control issues by the Dots pitching staff, sending 12 batters to the plate producing seven runs.


It started with a pair of walks to Talan Thompson and Andrew Farley, Jacob Topping was hit by the pitch and Braylon Moore walked allowing Thompson to score the first run of the inning.


Trey Butcher followed with a ground out scoring Eli Pridemore to make it 6-1 and Brody Dalton had a two-out two-run single to score Topping and Moore to increase Chapmanville’s lead to 8-1.


After Tyson Thompson and Evan Plumley were hit by the pitch, Talan Thompson singled to score Dalton and Quinton Wagner making it 10-1 and Pridemore singled to plate Eli Messer with the seventh run of the sixth inning.


Dalton struck out the side in the bottom of the sixth to complete his third inning of relief and earn the save for the Tigers.


Dalton struck out eight and did not allow a hit in three innings. Topping started on the mound for the Tigers and allowed one hit, struck out one and walked one in 1 1/3 innings. Ian Plumley was the winning pitcher for Chapmanville after allowing one run on three hits in 1 2/3 innings while striking out one.


Chapmanville got on the board with two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead as Tyson Thompson delivered a run-scoring single and Evan Plumley had an RBI groundout.


The Tigers added to their lead in the third when Dalton scored on a wild pitch to put Chapmanville up 3-0 before Poca got on the board when Preston Bonnett singled to score Nolan Payne cutting the Tigers lead to 3-1 after three innings.


Moore scored on an error in the fifth to give Chapmanville a 4-1 lead after five innings.


Dominick Rogers suffered the loss on the mound for Poca. Rogers allowed three runs on three hits, struck out two and walked two in 3 1/3 innings. Hunter Tusing allowed four runs on three hits, struck out one and walked three in 1 2/3 innings and Cole Ricardson allowed four runs on three hits with one strikeout and one walk in one inning of relief for the Dots.


Preston Bonnett had one hit and one RBI to lead Poca at the plate. Payne, Rogers and Hayden Thompson each had one hit for the Dots.


Butcher had two doubles, drove in a run and scored a run to lead Chapmanville at the plate. Dalton had one hit, drove in two and scored three runs while Talan Thompson had one hit and two RBIs for the Tigers.


Moore, Pridemore and Tyson Pridemore each had one hit and drove in one run apiece while Topping had one hit and Evan Plumely an RBI for Chapmanville.
