WILLIAMSON Williamson city officials have confirmed that two firefighters injured in a Sunday morning building collapse have been released from the hospital.
City officials said that the frontage of a building, which caught fire Wednesday morning, collapsed Sunday morning.
Shane Runyon and Cameron Varney were responding to a call of a flare-up along 4th Avenue shortly around 5 a.m. Sunday morning when the frontage of the Muncy Auto Parts store collapsed trapping Varney underneath the debris and ruble.
Runyon was able to pull Varney from the debris and both men were transported to a local medical facility but has since been released according to a statement from City of Williamson Mayor Charlie Hatfield.
“Very happy and pleased to update you that both Firemen Varney and Runyon are recovering very well from their injuries,” Hatfield said in the statement on Facebook. “In fact, Cameron has been released from the hospital to complete his recovery at home. Prayers are answered. God Bless.”
According to Hatfield, the building was contracted and scheduled for teardown.
Hatfield confirmed that one firefighter’s injuries were more severe than other but did not speculate on the severity of the injuries and city officials confirmed that a fire truck was damaged during the collapse.
“We can replace the damaged equipment, but the lives and safety of our firemen are not replaceable,” Hatfield said in a statement on the City of Williamson’s Facebook page. “Please send prayers as they receive treatment for their injuries.”
The building caught fire early Wednesday morning as crews with the WFD responded to a call at approximately 7:30 a.m.
The fire originated in an occupied apartment at the rear of the building. The tenant of that building was able to escape, and no injuries were reported.
Fire crews from Belfry, Chattaroy and Delbarton aided in battling the blaze that city officials said required nine hoses to douse the fire quickly.
It is undetermined what caused the flare up and traffic around 68 West 4th Avenue continues to be diverted as crews continued to clean up the ruble and debris left behind from the collapsed building.
