CHARLESTON West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey announced Friday that the state will appeal FEMA’s denial of a major disaster declaration following severe storms in June.
Flooding, landslides and mudslides caused widespread damage in Boone and Logan counties on June 22 and 23. The state requested federal Individual Assistance for residents, along with Hazard Mitigation funding to help reduce damage from future disasters.
FEMA recently denied the state’s request for assistance in the two counties.
The West Virginia Emergency Management Division now has 30 days from FEMA’s August 3 denial notice to submit additional documentation and damage assessments supporting the appeal.
Governor Morrisey says the state remains committed to helping families and communities affected by the storms. He also noted that federal disaster assistance was previously approved for Upshur and Lewis counties.
Residents in Boone and Logan counties who need immediate assistance are encouraged to contact their county emergency management agencies.
