WAYNE Jaxson Damron and Colton Mathis combined to rush for 250 of Wayne’s 408 rushing yards, and the Class AA No. 17-ranked Pioneers won its third straight on Oct. 27 with a 55-14 win over Logan at Pioneer Field.

Mathis rushed for 142 on 10 carries and scored two touchdowns and Damron ran for 108 yards on 10 attempts and three touchdowns for Wayne, who can clinch a Class AA playoff berth with win at home against Poca tonight.

The Pioneers (5-4), who made 16 straight Class AA playoff appearances from 1999-2014, haven’t qualified for the postseason since 2018 and have only made the playoffs twice in eight prior seasons.

Logan, who has lost eight straight since a 46-21 win over Sissonville on Sept. 1, trailed Wayne early 6-0 after Damron’s 2-yard run, however, the Wildcats deficit didn’t long as Adam Baisden hooked up with Julius Clancy for a 90-yard touchdown pass to even the score a 6-apiece. Baisden hooked up with Zayden Sherod for the two-point conversion and an 8-6 lead.

Wayne got a pair of touchdowns runs, 15 and 12-yards, from Mathis and led the Wildcats 22-6 after one quarter of action.

The two touchdowns by Mathis was the start of a Wayne offensive onslaught that saw the Pioneers score 49 unanswered points. Even more impressive was the fact that Wayne held Logan to four total yards following the 90-yard touchdown pass.

The Wildcats finished with 94 yards of total offense and was held to minus-37 yards on the ground.

Damron scored on a 5-yard run in the second quarter and added a 24-yard run in the third quarter for Wayne, who also got a 4-yard touchdown from Kaiden Hayton, a 13-yard scoring strike from Fisher Fry to Zane Adkins and a 3-yard run from Draven Egnor.

Fry was 7 of 12 passing for 78 yards and one touchdown. Hayton caught three passes for 27 yards, James Spradlin one reception for 18 yards and Adkins one catch for 13 yards.

Mason Spence had a 70-yard kickoff return for Logan’s only other touchdown on a running clock in the fourth quarter.

Baisden completed 5 of 17 passes for 131 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions. Clancy caught two passes for 94 passes, Gage Green had one reception for 27 yards and Cross Conn rushed for 10 yards on three attempts.

Logan (1-8), who has lost 11 of its last 13 games dating back to last season, will close out the regular season Friday night at Cardinal Conference member and ninth-ranked Herbert Hoover.
