Brumfield’s 4 touchdowns carries Hillbillies past Miners, 28-14

NEWTOWN Man High School quarterback Jayden Brumfield ran for three touchdowns and threw for one score as Class A No. 15 Man overcame three turnovers to defeat Class AA No. 18 Mingo Central 28-14 Friday night at James H. “Buck” Harless Stadium.


Brumfield finished with a team high 63 rushing yards on seven attempts and scored on runs of 2, 20 and 1 yards. He completed 6 of 9 passes for 96 yards and one touchdown and one interception.


With the game tied, 14-14, in the fourth quarter, Brumfield found Jacob Walls for a 37-yard touchdown with 11:15 remaining. Brumfield’s 1-yard run with 2:00 to play put the game on ice and sealed Man’s third straight victory.


Walls caught three of Brumfield’s six passes finishing with 79 yards and one touchdown.


Dylan Vance rushed for 114 yards and two touchdowns on 20 carries for Mingo Central. Chris Ross completed 8 of 19 passes for 66 yards while Malaki Sheppard caught two passes for 21 yards and Vance hauled in two receptions for 20 yards.


Man never trailed in a contest that featured two ties and a pair of Hillbilly turnovers in the first half.


Brumfield’s 2-yard run with 3:40 remaining in the first quarter capped off a 14 play, 72-yard drive that chewed up 8:20 of the opening quarter.


Vance scored on a 21-yard run to tie the contest at 7 with 11:50 to play in the second quarter.


Man took a 14-7 lead on Brumfield’s 20-yard run with 9:15 to play in the first half.


It would appear that the Hillbillies would take a seven-point lead into the locker room, but Mingo Central recovered a Jordan Adams fumble at the Man 34 with 3:20 to play.


Three plays later, Vance ran in from 1-yard to tie the contest, 14-14, with 2:24 to play before halftime.


Man forced a three-and-out on Mingo Central’s first possession, but Chris Isaacs muffed a punt which was recovered by Ashton Ooten at the Miner 28.


Three plays later, the Miners appeared to take the lead on Vance’s 60-yard run, but the touchdown was nullified for a hold at the Hillbilly 47. The drive stalled at the Hillbilly 28 as Man took over with 3:33 remaining in the third.


Nine plays later, Brumfield found Walls for a 37-yard touchdown with 11:15 remaining in the fourth quarter for a 21-14 lead.


The Hillbillies turned the Miners over on down on their next defensive possession and took over with 8:00 to play.


Fourteen plays and 69 yards later, the Hillbillies took a 28-14 lead on Brumfield’s 1-yard run with 2:00 to play.


Man converted 9 of 10 third down conversions and was 1 for 1 on fourth down while Mingo Central converted just 3 of 10 third down attempts and was 1 for 6 on fourth down.


Man, who entered the week 15th in the West Virginia Secondary Schools Activities Commission Class A playoff ratings, will move up the rankings when the new ratings are released Tuesday afternoon.


Mingo Central falls to 1-2 with the loss and will travel to Poca Friday night. Man improves to 3-1 and will travel to New Richmond to face the Wyoming East Warriors.
