In high school basketball action, the Chapmanville Tigers defeated the Wyoming East Warriors 53-40 Thursday night at Danny Godby Gymnasium to claim the Co-Region 3 Championship. The Tigers are returning to the state tournament for the fifth year in a row, and the sixth time in seven years.
The previous two games between Chapmanville and Wyoming East were defensive struggles with the Tigers winning 39-38 in Chapmanville, and the Warriors winning 42-39 at Wyoming East. This game proved to be much of the same for most of the game,
Chapmanville held a 21-19 lead at the half. The Tigers were leading by one late in the third quarter and star sophomore Brody Dalton on the bench in foul trouble. Chapmanville was able to take the largest lead of the game into the fourth quarter at 32-27.
In the final period, the Tigers were able to pull away from the free throw line, and on the strength on Dalton's team high 20 points, they shut down the Warriors defensively for the third time this season to earn a return trip to Charleston, and an opportunity to defend their crown.
Chapmanville will take the hardwood in the state quarterfinals Tuesday morning when they face off with Clay County. Tipoff is set for 11:15 a.m.
