SISSONVILLE The Chapmanville High School golf team got the 2025 season off to a great shot Thursday in the Mattox Potter Capital City Classic at the Edgewood Country Club.
The Tigers, who finished tied for third at last year’s Class AA state championships, finished third out of 28 teams in the tournament named for the late George Washington High School golfer who died of cancer January 24, 2025 at the age of 16.
Chapmanville finished with a score of 20-over par 233, led by senior Justus Mann with a 2-over par 73 including four birdies.
Mann finished tied for fifth with Hurricane’s Parker O’Dell and Cabell Midland’s Wyatt Maynard.
Hurricane, last season’s Class AAA runner up, swept the team and individual honors Thursday besting reigning Class AAA champion Cabell Midland by 14 strokes.
The Redskins shot a 1-under par 212 while the Knights carded a 13-over par 226. Finishing behind Chapmanville was George Washington and Shady Spring each carding a 22-over par 235 to tie for fourth.
Parkersburg South shot a 27-over par 240 to finish sixth, Wahama was seventh with a 241, Charleston Catholic finished eighth, Winfield ninth and George Washington’s B-squad and Morgantown tied for 10th.
It was the second tournament win in four days for the Redskins, who won the Duke Ridgley Invitational Monday at the Guyan Golf and Country Club.
Hurricane sophomore Isaac Hayes and Parkersburg South senior Cam Fallon were the only two golfers to break par Thursday. Hayes shot a 3-under 68 to claim individual medalist honors, one shot better than Fallon, who shot a 2-under 69. Hurricane senior Carson O’Dell shot an even-par 71 to finish third and Charleston Catholic senior Will Gruse was fourth after carding a 1-over par 72.
Morgantown sophomore Angela Yao, Wahama senior Grant Roush and Williamstown junior Madilyn Buttrey each shot a 3-over 74 to tie for eighth place.
To go along with Mann’s 73, the Tigers got an 8-over par 79 from sophomore Gavin Stollings, and a 10-over par 81 from senior Isaac Walters to finish as the highest finishing Class AAA team in the field.
Chapmanville finished two shots better than last season’s Class AA champion Shady Spring and was 12 shots better than Winfield, who shot a 32-over par 245 to finish ninth.
The trio of schools are expected to compete for the Class AAA state championship later this season in Wheeling as West Virginia moves to four classifications for golf.
Tiger senior Cameron Wooten also took part in the classic and carded a 15-over par 86.
