Chapmanville rally falls short at Winfield

WINFIELD   Brody Ilderton had 14 points including two free with 21.1 seconds remaining in regulation as Winfield won its fourth straight 63-60 over Class AAA No. 6 Chapmanville on Friday night.

 

Chapmanville trailed by 17 in the third quarter before rallying to take a one-point lead, 61-60, on Dakota Dalton’s 3-pointer with 46 seconds remaining.

 

The Tigers had a chance to take the lead following Ilderton’s free throws, however, Joey Gollihue was tied up by Preston Keiffer giving the ball back to the Generals with 8.8 seconds to play giving the ball back to the Generals.

 

Chapmanville immediately fouled Reid Fisher, who made both free throws with 6.8 seconds to play to give Winfield a 63-60 lead.

 

Following a timeout, Chapmanville had a chance to force overtime as Benji Adkins received an inbound pass from Jay Capers. Adkins attempted to get the ball back to Capers, but the pass was handoff was bobbled by Capers and went out of bounds as time expired.

 

Capers and Gollihue each scored a game-high 16 points to lead Chapmanville. Dalton finished with eight and Adkins had six for the Tigers.

 

Owen Taylor joined Ilderton in double figures finishing with 13 while Fisher and Mydan Oglesby each had nine and Keiffer and Tyler Peros both had eight points for Winfield.

 

Winfield was 13 of 14 from the foul line while Chapmanville mad just 6 of 13 attempts.

 

The win improved the Generals to 8-4 on the season, but mostly importantly improved them to 2-1 in Class AAA Region IV competition.

 

The Tigers dropped to 7-4 overall and 2-1 in Class AAA Region IV games and had their modest two-game winning streak snapped.

 

Winfield will travel to Nitro Tuesday while Chapmanville hits the road to face Capital on Wednesday before returning home to host Nitro on Friday.
