Chief Academic Officer Appointed at Southern

MOUNT GAY Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College has named Dr. Christina Johnson as interim chief academic officer, effective April 21st.
According to a news release from Southern, Dr. Johnson currently serves as assistant vice president of assessment and accreditation and accreditation liaison officer at BridgeValley Community and Technical College. She has more than two decades of experience in higher education, including work in classroom instruction, academic leadership, and institutional accreditation.
A native of West Virginia, Johnson earned a bachelor’s degree in biology from WVU Tech in 2000 and began her career as an adjunct instructor. She joined Bridgemont Community and Technical College in 2009 as a life sciences instructor and continued with BridgeValley after the 2014 merger. Her academic credentials also include a master’s degree in biological sciences and a doctorate in leadership studies, both from Marshall University.
Over her tenure at Bridge Valley, she held several leadership roles, including Faculty Senate Chair, Department Chair of Science, Associate Dean of Academic Assessment and Student Learning, and Assistant Vice President of Assessment and Accreditation. She also served as a peer reviewer for the Higher Learning Commission and contributed to the journal Intersection through the Association for the Assessment of Learning in Higher Education.
Outside of her professional work, Johnson volunteers as an animal foster with the Kanawha-Charleston Humane Association.
“I am honored to serve Southern during this leadership transition,” said Dr. Johnson in a statement released by Southern. “I look forward to supporting and collaborating with the faculty, staff, and students, and to sharing my accreditation experience to advance the mission of Southern.”
