Childers, Howe lead AAA No. 5 Lady Eagles past AA No. 7 Lady Tigers, 55-44

LOGAN Avery Childers and Martina Howe combined for 44 points and Class AAA No. 5 Robert C. Byrd defeated Class AA No. 7 Chapmanville 55-44 Saturday afternoon in the 2023 Wildcat Classic Premiere Hoops Showcase at the Willie Akers Arena.


Childers finished with a game-high 23 points, 18 of those coming in the second and fourth quarters, while Howe scored 15 of her 18 in the first half as Robert C. Byrd (7-2) won its third straight game.


Alaira Evans had 21 points, 16 coming in the second half, for Chapmanville (7-3). Jaiden Mahon knocked down three second quarter 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for the Lady Tigers.


Howe scored eight points in the first quarter to put the Lady Eagles out front 11-9 after one quarter of play. The Lady Eagles stretched their lead to six, 15-9, before Mahon hit three 3’s as part of a Chapmanville 9-2 run the tied the contest, 18-18, with 3:45 to play before halftime.


Childers, who scored nine points in the second quarter, had seven points during the Lady Eagles’ 9-3 run to end half to boost RCB’s lead to 27-21 at halftime.


Childers scored four straight points to start the third quarter as the Lady Eagles lead ballooned to 10 points, 31-21, with 6:24 to play in the quarter.


Chapmanville answered right back with a 10-3 run and drew to within three, 34-31, with 1:40 to play on a pair of free throws from Evans.


Childers hit three field goals made three free throws in a 17-10 run that broke the game open and gave RCB its biggest lead, 51-39, with 2:44 to play in the fourth quarter.
