Cogar, Wildcats Defense too much for Hillbillies

LOGAN Senior quarterback Jaxon Cogar accounted for 217 yards of total offense and Logan’s defense held Man to 87 yards of total offense in the Wildcats 20-7 victory over the Hillbillies in the Lions Bowl Thursday night at Willis-Nisbet Stadium.


Cogar rushed for 132 yards and one touchdown on 27 carries and completed 10-of-16 passes for 85 yards.


Aiden Slack showed his versatility on the field, accounting for 172 all-purpose yards. Slack ran for 80 yards, caught two passes for 19 yards, returned the opening kickoff 50 yards to set up Logan’s first score, had a 23-yard punt return, intercepted a pass on defense and kicked two field goals and two extra points in the victory.


Cogar scored on a 5-yard touchdown run in the first quarter, Landon Moore returned a fumble 17-yards for a touchdown while Slack kicked field of 39 and 23 yards in the second quarter to account for all of the Wildcats points in the first half.


Man got on the board in the third quarter when Jacob Walls stepped in front of a Cogar pass and returned it 37 yards for a pick six to cut the Wildcats lead to 20-7 with 6:04 to play in the third quarter.


Following its interception of Cogar, Man’s Lukas Haney was able to recover a Cogar fumble on 4th-and-1 play and return it 23 yards to give Man a first down at the Logan 36 with 1:08 remaining in the third quarter.


Man quarterback Jayden Brumfield hit Dusten Baisden for a 6-yard gain. Baisden ran 5 yards to give the Hillbillies a first down at the Wildcat 25 to end the third quarter.


Baisden’s 5-yard run to start the fourth move the ball to the Logan 20, but on 2nd-and-5 Man was called for holding, one of 12 penalties for 81 yards on the evening for the Hillbillies, moving the ball back to the Wildcat 31.


On the next play, Brumfield was intercepted by Slack at the Wildcat 8 with 10:33 remaining.


Man never got the ball back as Logan ran out the final 10:33 to secure its second consecutive victory in the series.


Following a 50-yard opening kickoff return by Slack to start the game, Logan marched down the field in seven plays as Cogar ran in from the 4 to cap a 44-yard drive. Slack’s extra point gave the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 8:35 to play in the opening quarter.


After a Hillbilly three-and-out, Logan marched down the field and appeared posed for a second touchdown, however, Cogar was sacked for a 7-yard loss on a third down play from the Man 14.


Slack booted a 39-yard field goal to give Logan a 10-0 lead with 10:07 remaining in the opening half.


Three plays later, Brumfield stripped sacked by Cogar as Moore picked up the loose pigskin at Man 17 and raced untouched for a touchdown. Slack’s extra point gave Logan a 17-0 lead with 8:30 remaining in the half.


Slack’s second field goal, this one from 23-yards, gave Logan a 20-0 lead at halftime.


The Wildcats outgained the Hillbillies 276-87 in total offense. Logan had 21 first downs to Man’s five, ran 60 plays to just 26 for the Hillbillies and held the ball for 32:36 out of 48 minutes.


Garrett Williamson had four receptions for 38 yards and Bryce Davis recorded 13 tackles while Cogar and Shelton Stone each had six stops for Logan.


Man’s Jordan Adams accounted for 105 all-purpose yards. He carried the ball four times for 20 yards and returned three kicks for 85 yards. Baisden ran for 28 yards on nine carries while Brumfield completed 3-of-his-5 passes for 20 yards. Chris Isaacs hauled in two passes for 15 yards for the Hillbillies.


On defense, Devon Sanders led Man with 10 tackles, Brumfield and Jim Green each had eight stops while Adams and Baisden each had seven tackles for the Hillbillies.


Logan travels to Sissonville Friday for a Cardinal Conference contest with the Indians while Man hosts rival Mount View in its annual Hall of Fame contest.
