WILLIAMSON A convicted murderer from will spend the rest of his life in prison for the 2023 ambush killing of West Virginia State Police Sgt. Cory Maynard.

32-year-old Timothy Kennedy was sentenced Tuesday in Mingo County Circuit Court after a jury convicted him in May of first-degree murder, armed robbery, disarming a police officer and two counts of attempted murder.

A seven hours long manhunt followed the shootings as officers from all over the state responded to apprehend the Matewan man. The crime spree forced residents to shelter in place and stay in their homes the night of June 2, 2023.

Mingo County Circuit Judge Joshua Butcher denied defense motions for a new trial, acquittal and a continuance before sentencing Kennedy to life without mercy for murder. Kennedy also received consecutive sentences of 50 years for armed robbery, three to 15 years for each attempted murder conviction and one to five years for disarming a police officer.

Five members of Sgt. Cory Maynard's family addressed the court before sentencing, describing the lasting impact of his death. His wife, Rachel Maynard, spoke about raising their two children without their father, while his mother, Leslie Maynard, demanded that Kennedy look at the family and take responsibility for his actions.

Kennedy declined an opportunity to address the court.

Judge Joshua Butcher called the crimes "grave and heinous acts," saying no sentence could restore what the Maynard family had lost.
