The Marshall University alumni team “Herd That” got off to a great start in the 1-million-dollar winner take all basketball tournament on Saturday, picking up a win 85-76 over Team DRC (named after player/GM and former NFL defensive back Dominque Rodgers Cromartie). The Herd That squad never trailed in the game and took care of business in front of a partisan crowd at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.
Jacorey Williams led the way for the Herd That squad scoring a game high 23 points shooting 10 of 17 from the field. Jon Elmore added 21 points and Logan High school alumni Stevie Browning finished with six points and four assists. Elmore and Williams credited their style of play for the win against a very tough team DRC. Elmore said the Herd That squad played well but they didn’t shoot the ball well as they normally do.
Herd That out rebounded DRC 43-30, points in the paint 48-30, and second chance points 18-8. Herd That is scheduled to be back in action on Monday evening at 7pm. They will take on TBT veterans Team 23.
BEST VIRGINIA
The Best Virginia WVU alumni team found themselves in a dog fight in the opening round of the TBT on Saturday afternoon and pulled off a big win on a last second lay-up by Kevin Jones.
With the Elam Ending rule in effect Best Virginia only needed to score 8 points to get the win while their opponent Team Woco Showtime needed 17 to win the game. Woco went on a run with the score set at 68-67 in favor of Best Virginia and the next bucket would get the win.
Woco drove down the court looking to pull off the huge upset and silence the very loud WVU/ Best Virginia fanbase. However, a turnover led to a Kevin Jones lay-up for the Best Virginia win with a final score of 70-67. Jones led Best Virginia scoring with 18 points and 13 boards, John Flowers had 15 points and 6 rebounds, and Tarik Phillip had 11 points and 10 rebounds.
Woco Showtime saw a huge outburst from NCAA all-time 3-point shooting leader Fletcher Magee who had 21 points including shooting 5-7 from three-point land.
Best Virginia will be back in action on tonight at 9 p.m. on WVOW Radio.
