Hillbillies beat Bulldogs, snap nine-game losing streak

MAN Senior Colton Miller 16 of his game-high 25 points in the second half as Man snapped a nine-game losing streak with a 57-48 victory over Van on Senior night Friday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.


Miller, one of three seniors on the Man High School roster, made eight field goals and was 8 of 10 from the foul line. Chris Isaacs finished with 11 points and Caleb Vance six points as the senior trio combined for 42 of the Hillbillies 57 points.


Van led Man 28-26 at halftime and held a 34-30 lead with 5:03 remaining before the Hillbillies closed the third quarter on a 16-0 run to take a 46-30 lead after three quarters.


Miller scored 10 third quarter points as the Hillbillies outscored the Bulldogs 20-6 in the third frame. Miller's free throw with 7:41 to play in the fourth pushed Man's run to 17-0 as the Hillbillies held the Bulldogs without a point over a span of 6:46.


Shaun Booth hit back-to-back 3's to cut the deficit to 47-40 with 6:04 to play. Booth's third 3 of the quarter brought the Bulldogs to within six, 50-44, with 1:44 remaining.


Despite making just one field goal in the fourth, a Devon Sanders layup with 1:06 remaining, Man was able to withstand a late Van rally and ice the game from the free throw line where the Hillbillies made 9 of 12 attempts in the final eight minutes.


Miller and Isaacs combined for 11 points in the first quarter as Man used a 13-2 run to race out to a 15-7 lead with 48 seconds remaining. Van closed the quarter on an 8-0 run to tie the contest at 15 after one quarter.


Josh Marcum's 3 with 5:11 to play before halftime gave Van a 20-19 lead. Vance hit a 3-pointer that gave Man a 24-21 lead with 2:39 remaining in the first half, but a 7-2 Bulldogs capped off by Booth's layup with four seconds remaining gave Van a 28-26 halftime lead.


Jax McCarty led Van with 17 points while Booth scored nine of his 15 points in the fourth quarter and Marcum finished with 11 for the Bulldogs.


Van concludes the regular season with a 2-19 record while Man improved to 3-18 with the win.


The Bulldogs and Hillbillies will meet Monday night in the opening round of the Class A Region 4 Section 1 tournament at Van High School with the winner facing second-ranked Tug Valley on Wednesday at Tug Valley High School.
