MAN Jamere Knuckles passed for 172 yards, accounting for three touchdowns, Aidan Burke had a 46-yard touchdown reception and returned an interception 80 yards for a second touchdown, and Mingo Central pulled away from Man 27-8 Friday night at William “Tootie” Carter Field at George A. Queen Memorial Stadium.
Knuckles completed 10-of-14 passes for 172 yards, including a 46-yard touchdown to Burke and a 47-yard touchdown to Mattox Sartin, and rushed for 41 yards on nine carries and a 31-yard touchdown.
Burke caught two passes for 54 yards and Sartin had two catches for 42 yards and Keziah Joplin had a team-high three receptions for 40 yards for the Class AA fifth-ranked Miners, who improved to 4-0 on the season.
Man (1-3), ranked 18th in Class A, outgained Mingo Central, 266-215, in total yards, but was stopped three times inside Mingo Central territory. One drive resulting in a turnover on downs at the Miners 9, a fumble on the Miners 5 killed another drive, and an interception returned 80 yards for a pick six killed a third drive.
Josh Spriggs rushed for 78 yards on 12 carries and scored Man’s lone touchdown, a 15-yard run that brought the Hillbillies within one point, 7-6, with 9:35 to play in the second quarter.
It would be as close as the Hillbillies would get to taking the lead as Knuckles hooked up with Burke for a 46-yard touchdown on 3rd-and-1 with 8:09 remaining before halftime to take a 14-6 lead.
Mingo Central recovered a Spriggs fumble at the Miner 5, but moments later Man would register a safety when a snap from center sailed over the head of Knuckles and out of the end zone to cut the deficit to 14-8 with 6:24 left in the second quarter.
Kaleb Mullins carried the ball 19 times for 75 yards and Jake Endicott had 12 carries for 55 yards for the Hillbillies.
Mingo Central returns home Friday night and will host winless Wyoming East while Man looks to snap a two-game losing streak when the Hillbillies welcome Class A No. 15 Greenbrier West.
