Lady Hillbillies capture Class A Region 4 Section 1 championship with 3-2 win over Lady Tide

SETH Kirsten Ellis and Trista Marcum had RBI singles in the first and Morgan Cooper added a home run in the fourth as third-seeded Man defeated top-seeded Sherman 3-2 Wednesday evening to win the Class A Region 4 Section 1 championship.


The Lady Hillbillies advance to next week’s best of three championship series where they will face reigning Class A champion Wahama in the Region 4 championship.


Game one is slated for Tuesday at Man with game two at Wahama and if necessary a third game would be played at Man.


Cooper was the winning pitcher in the circle for Man. Cooper went seven innings in the circle allowing two runs on four hits while striking out 10, walking two and was 2-for-2 at the plate with a home run and two runs scored for the Lady Hillbillies.


Cooper, Ellis and Marcum combined to go 5-for-9 with three RBIs for Man.


Cooper led off the game with a single and came around to score on Ellis’ single and Ellis scored on Marcum’s single to give Man a 2-0 lead after one inning of play.


The Lady Hillbillies added to their lead in the fourth inning when Cooper hit a two-out solo home run over the centerfield fence to give Man a 3-0 lead.


Sherman got on the board in the bottom of the fifth on a solo home run off the bat of Summer Harvey to close within two runs, 3-1, after five complete.


Hailea Skeens added a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning to plate Lauren Guthrie and bring Sherman within one, 3-2, after six innings.


Chloe Treadway took the loss for Sherman in the circle after allowing three runs on 10 hits in seven innings. Treadway struck out three and walked two and was 1-for-3 at the plate.


Harvey was 1-for-3 with a home run and one RBI for Sherman. Skeens was 1-for-2 and drove in one run while Kenzi Rinchich finished 1-for-3.


Sherman, who had won three consecutive elimination games including Tuesday’s 2-0 victory at Man, finishes the year with a record of 17-9.


Man, who has won two consecutive sectional crowns, improves to 13-4 and will host Wahama Tuesday evening in a rematch of last year’s Class A Region 4 championship.


Wahama defeated Man in last season’s regional championship. The White Falcons won game one, 2-0, at Wahama and won the Region 4 crown with an 11-4 victory at Man in 10 innings.
