Lady Tigers 13-point rally falls short in loss to Summers County

CHAPMANVILLE   Class AA No. 2 Summers County survived a late rally from No. 7 Chapmanville, needing a bucket in the final 30 seconds to defeat the Lady Tigers 49-46 in a battle of Class AA Region III teams Monday night at the Danny Godby Gymnasium.


Gracie Harvey's layup with 28 seconds remaining put the Lady Bobcats up 48-46. Chapmanville had an opportunity to tie, but Alaira Evans was whistled for a charge with 16 seconds to play and Avery Lilly made one of two free throws with five seconds remaining to give Summers County a three-point lead.


Haley Fleming's halfcourt potential game tying 3-pointer was off the mark as the buzzer sounded giving Summers County a season sweep of the Lady Tigers.


Abby Persinger led Summers County with 17 points and Harvey added 14 as Summers County squandered a 13-point fourth quarter lead before Harvey's basket 11 seconds after Chapmanville had tied the game at 46 on Jaiden Mahon's layup.


Summers County led Chapmanville 46-33 on Persinger's basket with 3:20 to play.


Trailing by 13 with under three minutes to play, Chapmanville used an 13-0 run over the next 2:11 to even the score. Evans and Mahon combined for 10 of the Lady Tigers 13 points to spur the rally.


Evans led Chapmanville with a game-high 18 points and Mahon finished with 12 points.


Chapmanville led just once in the contest as Evans scored with 6:26 remaining in the first quarter to give the Lady Tigers a 2-0 lead before Summers County scored 16 of the next 18 points to take a 16-4 lead after one quarter.


Trailing by 10 with 6:29 to play in the first half, Chapmanville closed the quarter on a 10-2 run to pull within two points, 21-19, at halftime.


Summers County led 35-26 after three quarters and took its biggest lead of the game when Braelyn Farrish drained a 3-pointer with 6:28 to play to give Lady Bobcats a 42-28 lead with 6:28 to play capping an 8-1 run.


Summers County improved to 15-5 with the win and will host Pocahontas County Friday evening in its regular season finale. The Lady Bobcats will be the second seed in the Class AA Region III Section 1 tournament and will host Bluefield Tuesday evening.


Chapmanville fell to 12-9 with the loss and will host Poca Thursday evening in its regular season finale. The Lady Tigers secured the top seed in the Class AA Region III Section 2 tournament and will host the winner of Mingo Central and Liberty (Raleigh) on Friday, February 23.
