Late Logan rally falls short in loss at Chapmanville, 66-56

CHAPMANVILLE   Zion Blevins was one of three players to reach double figures as Class AA No. 6 Chapmanville nearly squandered a 16-point fourth lead and held on to defeat county rival and Class AAA No. 10 Logan 66-56 on Friday night at the Danny Godby Gymnasium.

 

The big three of Chapmanville combined for 47 of the Tigers 66 points as Zion Blevins led the way with 18 points, Cam Blevins added 16 points and Joey Gollihue had 15 for the Tigers, who led 55-39 following Gollihue’s 3-pointer with 7:17 remaining in the fourth quarter.

 

Matt Hatfield scored 18 points, Zayden Sherod had 13 and Julius Clancy 12 for the Wildcats, who have lost two straight and three of their last five games.

 

Logan outscored Chapmanville 17-5 in a span of 5:30 of the fourth quarter to trim a 16-point deficit to four, 60-56, on Sherod’s basket with 1:40 to play.

 

Sherod scored eight of his 13 points during the fourth quarter run and Clancy contributed with five of his 12 points to bring Logan within striking distance, however, the Tigers responded with a 6-0 run to end the game.

 

The Wildcats came out strong, leading 14-12 after one quarter on Hatfield’s 3-pointer just before the first quarter buzzer.

 

Logan extended its lead to five, 17-12, on Clancy’s 3-pointer to start the second quarter. After Chapmanville scored the next four points to trim the deficit to one, 17-16, Cole Blankenship knocked down a 3 to give Logan a 20-16 lead.

 

Chapmanville responded with a 6-0 run to take a 22-20 lead before Hatfield answered with his third 3 of the half to give Logan a 23-22 lead with 2:41 to play before halftime.

 

It would be the last lead of the game for the Wildcats as the Tigers closed the half on a 10-2 run to take a 32-25 lead into the locker room.

 

Zion Blevins, Came Blevins and Gollihue combined for 24 of Chapmanville 32 points in the first half.

 

Logan made five 3’s in the first half and eight for the game to stay within striking distance of Chapmanville.
