Lincoln County Assessor resigns, charged with public intoxication

HAMLIN The Lincoln County’s Assessor has agreed to resign after being charged with public intoxication at work.


According to a criminal complaint, 39-year-old Jerome Allen Browning, of Harts, faces a public intoxication charge and a charge of willful disruption of government process.


Metro News reported Browning turned in his resignation to the Lincoln County Commission on Thursday, June ninth.


The criminal complaint stated Browning was found by courthouse staff sleeping on a couch and allegedly in an “altered state.”


Moreover, Browning allegedly admitted to taking too much sleeping medication.


The assessor’s office closed on day last week after workers in the office walked off the job following the incident.


A new assessor will appointed by Lincoln County commissioners until the next election cycle.

Browning has served as assessor since 2020.
