LOGAN   Matt Hatfield scored 26 points as sixth-ranked Logan defeated Wayne 51-38 in the Class AAA Region IV Section 2 championship Friday night at the Willie Akers Arena.

Hatfield knocked down six 3-points, five coming in the first quarter as Logan built a 19-2 lead in winning its seventh straight game.

The Wildcats improved to 15-9 and will host Ripley (11-13) in one of two Class AAA Region IV championship games at 7 p.m. Wednesday night at the Willie Akers Arena.

Wayne (10-12) will travel to fourth-ranked Nitro (22-2) in the other Region IV championship game Wednesday night and the two winners will advance to the state tournament March 12-16 at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.

Despite falling behind by double digits early, the Pioneers fought back to within nine points, 19-10, with an 8-0 run to start the second quarter, before Logan regrouped and led 25-14 at halftime.

Ivan Miller had 10 points, McCormick Ilderton added seven and Cole Blankenship, Julius Clancy and Zayden Sherod each scored four points for Logan.

Wayne, who will be making only its third ever appearance in a regional tournament, was led in scoring by Isaac Meddings, who finished with 14 points.

Zane Adkins, Colton Heck and Ronnie Staley each had six points, Peyton Marcum three, Andrew Dotson two and Kameron Christian one point to round out the scoring for the Pioneers.

With the win, Logan won its 63rd sectional championship in school history. The Wildcats first sectional championship was during the 1931 season, and they have won three of the last four Class AAA Region IV Section 2 championships.

Wayne and Nitro met once during the regular with Nitro winning 75-45 on February 3 at Wayne.

Wayne, who has lost two of its last three games after a five-game winning streak, will be looking for the school's first state tournament appearance.

Logan and Ripley did not play during the regular season; however, the matchup is a rematch of last season's regional championship won by the Vikings, 78-66, at Ripley High School.
