LOGAN The Logan County Commission recognized Logan High School Coach Kevin Gertz and Logan’s girls basketball team on winning the state championship in Class AAA
Coach Gertz was awarded the Van Meter Award last week for not just leading the girls basketball team to their first championship, but also for leading the Logan High baseball team to its seventh state title last season. The award recognizes the best high school coaches.
“I’m very honored to have coached this group of kids,” Coach Gertz told commissioners and the audience in attendance. “No group that I’ve ever had worked as hard as this group.”
Several of Logan’s girls were named to the Class AAA All-State Team following the championship tournament in March. The selected players included senior Peyton Ilderton as captain of the first team and junior Natalie Blankenship for the second team All-State. Honorable mentions included Halle Crouse and Emma Elkins.
Gertz told commissioners, his team put in the hard work and they deserve the recognition.
“They sacrificed everything to win this title and make their hometown proud,” Gertz said. “I couldn’t be more proud of these young ladies.”
Commission President Danny Godby congratulated the team and their perseverance that netted the Lady Wildcats a 25-2 season record.
