Logan Little League defeats Charleston Northeast, falls to Barboursville in Softball State Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE  The Logan Little League softball all-stars opened with a win Sunday afternoon before dropping the nightcap on the first day of the West Virginia Little League Softball State Tournament Sunday at Charlie McCoy Town Park.

 

Logan defeated Charleston Northeast Little League 16-5 in four innings Sunday afternoon before falling to Barboursville Little League 9-3 in the nightcap of the Herd Division.

 

Logan will take on Summersville at 8 p.m. in an elimination game Monday evening.

 

Logan 16, Charleston Northeast 5: Four players recorded multiple hits and Logan broke open a close game with an eight-run fourth inning to win its state tournament opener over Charleston Northeast.

 

Peyton Sigmon led the 13-hit Logan attack with three hits including a double, two RBIs and two runs. Kaylee Conley had two hits, one of which was a double, and drove in three runs while Daphne Ellis had two hits, drove in two and scored twice and Myah Kirkendall had two hits, one RBI and three runs scored.

 

Logan jumped out to an 8-0 heading to the bottom of the third inning, but Charleston Northeast plated five runs to cut the deficit to 8-5 after three.

 

Josie Hardy had two hits and one RBI while Aubrey Belcher, Olivia Humphreys, Aubryanna Kimble and Reagan Veazy each had one hit and one RBI and Gracie Owens had one hit for the Northeast all-stars.

 

Taylor Akers allowed five unearned runs and seven hits in four innings to go along with seven strikeouts and one walk to pick up the win in the circle for Logan.

 

Hardy took the loss after allowing 16 runs – 10 earned – on 13 hits in four innings. She walked five and struck out three.

 

Eight different players registered at least one hit and 10 players recorded at least one RBI for Logan.

 

Abby Ellis had a double and drove in two runs and Cali Williamson doubled home a run for Logan, who also got run scoring hits from Ella Graham and Kenlee Tomblin and one RBI each from Akers and Arianna Herndon.

 

Barboursville 9, Logan 3: Chloe Casey struck out 11 and drove in two runs as Barboursville took advantage of 11 walks issued by Logan pitching and four errors to advance to Tuesday’s winners bracket championship of the Herd Division.

Barboursville will take on Jefferson at 8 p.m. Tuesday evening.

 

Casey allowed three runs on seven hits in six innings and Barboursville plated a pair of runs in the second, third and fourth and three more in the fifth and led 9-0 heading to the bottom of the fifth.

 

Logan plated two runs in the fifth and one in the sixth, but the nine-run deficit was too much to overcome.

 

Kirkendall had two hits including a triple and Williamson double and drove in one run for Logan, who also got one hit and one RBI each from Rylan Lambert and Peyton Sigmon. Akers and Abby Ellis had one hit each.

 

Jayci Black, Meadow Dille and Kenzi Peak each had one hit and one RBI and Madison Faulkner had one hit for Barboursville.

 

Daphne Ellis was saddled with the loss in the circle for Logan after allowing six runs on three hits in four innings. She issued nine walks and struck out four.

 

Ella Graham allowed three unearned runs on one hit in two innings of relief and struck out three and walked two.
