Man Little League splits on day one of Softball State Tournament

FAYETTEVILLE  The Man Little League softball all-stars split a pair of games Sunday in the West Virginia Little League Softball State Tournament Sunday at Charlie McCoy Town Park.

 

Man opened tournament play with a 13-1 win over the St. Albans Little League before falling 4-0 to Hite Saunders Little League to fall into the elimination bracket of the state tournament.

 

Man will try to stave off elimination Monday afternoon when they take on Craigsville Little League in the Mountaineer Bracket at 5:30 p.m.

 

Man 13, St. Albans 1: Brianna Blankenship hurled a one-hitter and was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, four RBIs and two runs scored in Man’s five inning win over St. Albans Sunday afternoon.

 

Mia Johnson had one hit, one RBI and scored two runs while Carly Caserta and Jasmine Smith each had one hit for the victorious Man All-Stars.

 

Anna Belcher, Caserta, Erika Mullins and Lydia Smith each scored two runs as Man jumped out to a 5-0 lead after one inning.

 

Braylin Manns was the losing pitcher for St. Albans after allowing 13 runs – four earned – in five innings. She allowed five hits, struck out 13 and walked four.

 

Blankenship took a no hitter into the fifth inning, but with one out, St. Albans Miyah Feazelle lined the seventh pitch of her at bat into left field for a single.

 

Blankenship finished the evening with five strikeouts and two walks in five innings of work in the circle.

 

Hite Saunders 4, Man 0: Harley Martin tossed a one hit shutout and Leighasia Latham had a triple, two-run home run and drove in three runs in Hite Saunders win over Man Sunday evening.

 

Martin struck out 14 and walked three, outdueling Man’s Mia Johnson. Johnson allowed four runs on three hits in six innings with 11 strikeouts and one walk.

 

Latham tripled home a run in the first inning and added a two-run home run in the fourth as Hite Saunders advanced to the Mountaineer winners bracket championship against Sophia at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday evening.

 

Anna Belcher singled with two outs in the fifth inning to break up Martin’s no-hit bid. Emma Rose, two walks, and Lydia Smith, one walk, were the only other runners to reach base for Man.

 

Abby Casto drove in a run with a first inning single for Hite Saunders.
