Pair of three-run innings carry Logan to sectional championship victory over Scott

LOGAN Class AA No. 2 Logan used a pair of three-run innings to punch its ticket to next week’s Class AA Region 4 championship defeating Scott 6-4 Saturday afternoon in the Class AA Region 4 Section 2 championship at Roger E. Gertz Field.


Logan improves to 22-6 with the win and will host game one of the Class AA Region 4 championship Monday May 23 at Roger E. Gertz Field against Sissonville or Winfield. The winner of section 2 will host game two on Tuesday May 24 and if necessary, a third game would be played at Logan on Wednesday May 25.


Jared Burnette tossed five shutout innings allowing just three hits while striking out four and walking two to pick his fifth win of the season.


For the second straight contest, Logan plated multiple runs in the first inning as the Wildcats plated three runs off Scott starting pitcher Hunter Null.


Korbin Bostic started the scoring with a two-run single scoring courtesy runner McCormick Ilderton and Dawson Maynard to give Logan a 2-0 lead.


Bostic came around to score on Konner Lowe’s two out RBI single to plate the third and final run of the first inning.


Null allowed six runs on nine hits while striking out four and walking one in six innings. After allowing four hits in the opening frame, Null settled down to hold the Wildcats to just two hits over the next four innings.


Scott plated two runs in the sixth to cut Logan’s to 3-2. Luke Knight scored on a wild pitch to get the Skyhawks on the board and Brady Carrico’s two out run-scoring single to plate Griffin Miller bringing Scott within one run.


Logan answered with three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Garrett Williamson had a run-scoring double to make it 4-2 and Ryan Roberts added a run-scoring single to give Logan a 5-2 lead.


The final run on the inning came around to score on a Scott error as Ilderton, who was pinch running for Lowe, scored from third on an error by the catcher Austin Light.


Seven of the Wildcats nine hits came during the first and sixth innings.


Trailing 6-2 entering the seventh and with their season on the line, the Skyhawks would not back down as they plated two runs to close the gap to 6-4.


Knight grounded into a fielder’s choice to score Light cutting Logan’s lead to 6-3 and Miller added a two out run-scoring double to plate Null cutting the deficit to 6-4.


Roberts then got Dylan Grant to strike out swinging for the final out of the contest sending Logan to the regional finals.


Roberts allowed one hit and struck out two in one inning of relief to earn the save. Chad Burnette allowed two runs on two hits while striking out one and walking one in one inning. Joey Canterbury faced three batters. Canterbury allowed two runs on two hits and one walk.


Carrico had two hits and drove in one run for Scott while Landon Stone had two hits. Knight and Miller each had a double, drove in one run and scored a run while Light and Null each had one hit and one run and Cooper Martin had a double for the Skyhawks.


Sixteen of Scott’s 26 games this season were decided by two runs or less. The Skyhawks were 3-13 in those games and ended the season with a 10-16 record.


Lowe had two hits and one RBI for Logan while Maynard had two hits, including a double and scored two runs for the Wildcats.


Bostic had one hit and two RBIs while Williamson had a RBI double and Roberts a RBI single for the Wildcats, who also got one hit each from Carson Kirk and Ramey.
