WHITMAN EMS and fire crews from Cora and the City of Logan responded to Southern West Virginia Asphalt, Inc., in the Whitman area Thursday morning.

A social media post by the Cora Volunteer Fire Department says the individual had become trapped in a hopper at the facility and was buried up to their torso in sand. Crews said the person was conscious and alert when they arrived.

Due to the complexity of the situation, first responders had to rely on specialized equipment during the rescue operation.

Once the victim was successfully extricated, they were treated on site by EMS crews with the Logan Emergency Ambulance Service Authority (L.E.A.S.A.) before being airlifted to a nearby hospital.

The individual's condition is unknown.

Emergency responders are asking the public to continue avoiding the immediate area when possible in order to give crews clear access to and from the property as the investigation into the accident continues.
