MAN Grant Russell hit a 15-foot jumper from the left elbow with 12 seconds to lift Richwood to a 54-52 win over Man Saturday night at the Man Memorial Fieldhouse.

Russell’s jumper over the outstretched arm of Man’s Josh Spriggs broke a 52-52 tie giving Richwood its first victory of the season.

Man had a chance to win or tie out of a timeout with two seconds remaining, but Dacoda O’Dell stepped in front of Caleb Vance as Vance’s potential game winning 3-point attempt was short of the mark as time expired.

Trae Trivolette led Richwood with 21 points and nine rebounds. Russell finished with 19 points and seven rebounds. Trivolette and Russell combined to make 17 of 26 shots from the field including 4 of 8 3-point attempts. The rest of the Lumberjacks were a combined 4 of 23 from the field.

Vance hit five of Man’s seven 3-pointers and led the Hillbillies with 15 points. Kaleb Mullins was 5 of 7 from the field and finished with 10 points. Trey Ward followed with nine points, six rebounds and four assists and Colton Miller scored nine, had four steals and three assists.

Richwood, who led by as many as 12 points in the opening quarter, held a 16-point lead, 27-11, on Aiden Miller’s 3-pointer with 4:51 to play before halftime.

The Hillbillies closed the gap to 10 points, 33-23, at halftime and continued to chip away at the lead which reached 12 points in the second half.

Man closed the gap to nine, 42-33, after three quarters, and put together a 15-4 run to take its first lead of the game, 48-46, on Vance’s 3 from the right wing with 2:31 to play in the fourth quarter.

Trivolette’s layup tied the game at 48, with two minutes left. Baskets from Miller and Ward put Man on top 52-48 with 1:38 to play, but the Hillbillies were unable to close out the contest as the Lumberjacks finished the game on a 6-0 run.

A layup from Trivolette trimmed the deficit to two, 52-50, with 1:10 to play. Following a Ward missed free throw with 39 second remaining, Richwood’s O’Dell was fouled and hit two free throws with 37 seconds remaining to tie the score at 52.

Man had a chance to regain the lead, however, Miller missed a short jumper with 32 seconds remaining. Freshman Josh Spriggs came down with the offensive rebound and was fouled with 29 seconds remaining. Spriggs missed the front end of an one-and-one opportunity and his miss was rebounded by O’Dell.

Following a Richwood timeout, the Lumberjacks got the ball in bounds to Russell. As Russell raced into the frontcourt, he got a screen from Trivolette, which allowed him to dribble to the left wing and spin into the lane near the left elbow. Russell’s shot over the arm of Spriggs swished through the net with 12 seconds remaining to give the Lumberjacks a 54-52 lead.

Richwood (1-13) will host Pocahontas County on Wednesday while Man (2-13) travels to Westside.

The Lumberjacks and Hillbillies are scheduled to meet Friday evening at Richwood.
