CHARLESTON West Virginia residents receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP, benefits now have more time to request replacement benefits for food lost during severe storms that began July 21.

The West Virginia Department of Human Services says the U.S. Department of Agriculture approved an extension of the normal 10-day reporting period. Eligible SNAP recipients in all 55 counties now have until Monday, August 10, to report storm-related food losses.

Households must currently receive SNAP benefits, document that the food loss resulted from the storms or a qualifying power outage and submit a signed affidavit. Residents can contact their local Department of Human Services office or the agency's customer service hotline for assistance.
