MOUNT GAY Southern West Virginia Community and Technical College is celebrating a major achievement.


Second-year nursing faculty member Ashleigh Barnette will receive the 2025 Mentorship Award from the West Virginia Nurses Association at this Sunday’s annual awards ceremony in Charleston.


The award recognizes nursing professionals who show exceptional dedication to guiding and inspiring the next generation of nurses.


In a statement released by Southern, Barnette says she is humbled by the honor and calls mentorship one of the most rewarding parts of her nursing journey.


“Investing in students and fellow nurses, walking alongside them as they grow in confidence and competence, and witnessing their passion for patient care develop is a great privilege,” Barnette said. “I believe our profession is strengthened when we intentionally support and uplift one another, and I am grateful for every opportunity I have had to do so.”


College leaders say her commitment to student success reflects Southern’s mission of excellence in healthcare education.


“Thank you to WVNA for this recognition and for your continued advocacy and leadership for nurses across our state. I am sincerely appreciative and look forward to celebrating with everyone at the Celebration of Nurses on Sunday.”


Southern called the award a well-deserved honor and commended Barnette on her continued commitment to nursing education and mentorship.
