Robert Fields | WVOW News MOUNT GAY Southern West Virginia Community & Technical College is showing progress under state oversight, according to an update given last week at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center to the West Virginia Council for Community and Technical College Education.
Southern's Interim President, Doctor Corley Dennison, said Thursday that governance issues that led to the council’s takeover in April have been resolved, with both the president’s office and board now functioning effectively. The council assumed control earlier this year after conflicts between the board and former President Pamela Alderman created instability and threatened the college’s accreditation.
Sony M. Dingess Porter, Chair of Southern's Board of Governors, put out a statement on Friday. " Over the past few months, we have faced some very challenging circumstances," Porter wrote, "but through the collective effort, trainings, and resilience of our leadership, staff, and the HEPC, we are turning a corner toward a brighter future."
Porter acknowledged that work still remains, but she said he is optimistic about the direction the college is heading.
"The changes implemented are laying the foundation for a sustainable, forward-looking institution that will continue to serve our students and communities for many years to come," Porter concluded.
Southern is preparing for a visit from the Higher Learning Commission on November 17th and 18th, which will include an evaluation and follow-up report.
Council members also voted to extend Dr. Dennison’s contract through May 2026 while the board begins the search for a permanent president. The emergency order in effect for Southern remains active through April 7th, 2027.
