Streaking Lady Wildcats ends Herbert Hoover’s 11-game winning streak

ELKVIEW   Charlie Albright tossed a complete game two-hitter and Ashlin Brumfield and Harlie Quick had two hits each and drove in a run as Logan won its seventh straight and snapped the Herbert Hoover Lady Huskies’ 11-game winning with a 2-1 victory Saturday afternoon.

 

Albright struck out 12 and walked two outdueling Herbert Hoover’s Leila Varney, who struck out 12, walked one and allowed two runs on seven hits in seven innings of work in the circle.

 

Herbert Hoover threatened to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh. Trailing 2-0, Lexi Kennedy singled to start the inning and was lifted for a courtesy runner, Elizabeth Turner, who advanced to second on a passed ball. Bella Haas followed with a single to plate Turner to cut the deficit to 2-1.

 

With two outs, Jaylee Carper singled to give the Lady Huskies runners at first and second. Albright got Sadi Wehrle to ground into a fielder’s choice ending the game and Herbert Hoover’s 11-game winning streak.

 

Herbert Hoover suffered its first loss of the season, but rebounded to defeat Greenbrier East, and is 12-1 on the season while Logan won its seventh straight game and is 8-2 on the year.

 

The Lady Wildcats haven’t lost since dropping the second game of a doubleheader to Greenbrier East, 4-3, on March 16.


Varney held Logan hitless through 3 1/3 innings until Harlee Quick singled with one out in the fourth inning. Quick’s single was the start of things to come for the Lady Wildcats as Ashlin Brumfield followed Quick’s single with a single of her own that scored Quick and produced the game’s first run.

 

Logan added to its lead in the in the sixth inning when Lacy Curry doubled to lead off the inning and came around to score on Quick’s single to give Logan a 2-0 lead.

 

Haas was 2 for 3 with one RBI and Varney 1 for 3 with a double for Herbert Hoover. The Lady Huskies also got hits from Carper, Kennedy and Wehrle.

 

Brumfield and Quick each went 2 for 3 with one RBI each for Logan. Curry had a double and Addison Brumfield and Kaylee Coleman had one hit each for the Lady Wildcats.

Herbert Hoover travels to Clay County Tuesday while Logan takes part in the Grand Strand Softball Classic in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina Monday through Thursday.

 

The Lady Wildcats will face Ellicottville (NY) Monday and take on Randolph (NY) on Tuesday. Logan will oppose Wayne (NY) Wednesday, face Brickenridge County (KY) on Thursday and close with Jefferstown (KY) on Friday.
