Tigers fall in opener to Fairmont Senior

CHAPMANVILLE   Zycheus Dobbs scored 23 points, Andre Grant had 21 and Class AAA No. 1 Fairmont Senior pulled away from Class AA No. 4 Chapmanville Regional 70-45 Big 10/Cardinal Conference Challenge Saturday night at Danny Godby Gymnasium.

 

Dobbs scored 14 of his game-high 23 points in the first half while Grant had 16 fourth quarter points to lead the two-time reigning Class AAA champions past the reigning Class AA champions.

 

Fairmont trailed early in the contest, 5-3, before closing the first quarter on a 17-6 run to take a 20-11 lead after one quarter of play.

 

Chapmanville trailed by 13 at halftime and could never mount a serious comeback effort that was marred by cold shooting, turnovers and lack of rebounding.

 

Zion Blevins led Chapmanville with 18 points and Benji Adkins had 10 points.

 

Tre Cumberledge added 10 points and Darrell Claybrook had nine for the Polar Bears.

 

Grant had three fourth quarter 3-pointers and Fairmont led by as many as 30 points in the final stanza.

 

Joey Gollihue had five points and Jett Baisden, Drew Berry and Cam Blevins each had four points for the Tigers.

 

Fairmont Senior improved to 2-0 on the season. Chapmanville will look for its first victory of the 2023-24 season on Friday when they host Sissonville in the first day of the Country Roads Showcase at Danny Godby Gymnasium.

 

On Saturday, the Tigers will host the Tomcats of Ashland (KY) at 8 p.m.
