MASON   The Chapmanville High School golf team shared sixth place with John Marshall Wednesday afternoon in the West Virginia Golf Association High School Invite at the Riverside Golf Club.

The Tigers shot a team total of 234 and finished 17 shots back of Hurricane, who won their second WVGA High School Invite, to remain atop the Tri State Cup standings with one event to play.

Heading into the final event on September 20 at the Stonewall Resort, Hurricane holds a 44-point over second place Cabell Midland and a 59.50 point advantage over George Washington and Shady Spring.

Hurricane tied University in the West Virginia Army National Guard WVGA Invite at the Glade Springs Cobb Course on Augst 6. Less than 24 hours later, the Redskins captured the Mattox Potter Capital City Classic at the Edgewood Country Club and finished third in the WVGA High School Invite at the Oglebay on Tuesday.

Neither Cabell Midland nor Shady Spring entered Wednesday's competition while George Washington's fourth place finish moved the Patriots up in the standings.

Wahama moved into the top five with its second place showing while Winfield, who finished third five shots behind Hurricane, moved into sixth place.

Chapmanville, competing in its third WVGA High School Invite, moved into seventh place.

Justus Mann shot a 6-over-par 73 and tied with six other golfers for seventh place. Joining Mann in the deadlock were Hurricane's Bryce Davis and Parker O'Dell, Ripley's Austin Donohew, Winfield's Lucas Hall, George Washington's William Johnson and Wahama's Brady Meadows.

Wahama's Grant Roush claimed medalist honors after firing a low round score of 3-under par 67. John Marshall's Drew Marling finished three shots after shooting an even-par 70.

Hurricane's Isaac Hayes and Christopher Conley of Gallia Academy (Ohio) tied for third after shooting a 1-over par 71 and Will Gruse of Charleston Catholic and Winfield's Gavin Martin each carded a 2-over-par 72 to tie for fifth.

Wahama led for much of the tournament and appeared on its way to a win before Hurricane's Davis shot a 1-under par 34 on the back nine, birdieing the 17th and 18th holes while Wahama's Jesse Jordan boogied six of the last seven holes and shot a 9-over-par 44, which allowed Hurricane to rally for the two-shot win over Wahama, who shot a 219.

Rounding out the top five was Winfield (222), George Washington (228) and Gallia Academy (231).

Chapmanville and John Marshall tied for sixth, Charleston Catholic (239) was seventh followed by Capital (241) and Fairmont Senior (243) rounding out the top 10.

Three other golfers competed for Chapmanville with Gavin Stollings firing a 10-over-par 80 to tie for 30th, Cameron Wooten shot an 11-over-par 81 and tied for 33rd and Cooper Evans finished with 13-over-par 83 to finish in a 40th place tie.

Chapmanville returns to the links Thursday evening in a four-team match at the Edgewood Country Club in Sissonville with Capital, Charleston Catholic and George Washington.
