Tigers rally from eight-run deficit defeat Hillbillies, 12-11

MAN Evan Plumley’s tiebreaking ninth-inning single, capped a wild comeback as Chapmanville rallied from an eight-run fourth inning deficit to beat county rival Man 12-11 Wednesday night at Man’s William “Tootie” Carter Athletic Field.


Tyson Thompson’s two-out bases clearing double off the right field fence and scored when Plumley singled to right off Braxton Messer (1-1). It was Plumley’s third hit and lone RBI of the game.


Thompson had four hits including a double and home run and drove in six runs for the Tigers.

Seven different Tigers had at least one hit as the Tigers erased an eight-run fourth inning deficit with a run in the fifth, three runs in the sixth and five more in the seventh.


Man scored eight runs in the bottom of the second after Chapmanville took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the top of the second.


After Chapmanville scored single runs in the third and fourth innings, Man plated three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-3 lead after four innings.

Ian Plumley (1-0), the third Chapmanville pitcher, was the winner. He allowed no hits in two innings.


Brody Dalton struck out one and pitched a scoreless seventh for his first save of the season.

Chapmanville starter Will Kirkendall allowed eight runs on five hits in 1 1/3 innings. He struck out one and walked one. Trey Butcher tossed 2 2/3 innings of relief allowing three runs on three hits while walking four and striking out one.


Braxton Messer (1-1) suffered the loss for Man after allowing five runs on six hits in 1 2/3 innings. He struck out four and walked one in relief of starter Caleb Blevins allowed seven runs on 11 hits in 5 1/3 innings. He struck out five and walked two.


Chapmanville jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second inning when Evan Plumley scored on Jacob Topping’s sacrifice fly.


Man plated eight runs in the bottom of the second on six hits and one Chapmanville error. Kaden Dickerson got Man on the board with a run-scoring single to score Brady Hall-Montgomery and Caleb Vance followed with a single to score Bo Thompson giving Man a 2-1 lead. Dickerson then scored on an error by the left fielder to increase Man’s advantage to 3-1.


Vance scored when Jace Adkins was hit by the pitch to give Man a 4-1 lead and Preston Blankenship followed with a two-run double scoring Colton Miller and Blevins giving Man a 6-1 lead and Thompson second hit of the inning scored Adkins and Blankenship for an 8-1 Man lead after three.


Chapmanville got a run-scoring single from Tyson Thompson in the third and an RBI groundout from Butcher in the fourth to close the gap to 8-3.


Man answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth to take an 11-3 lead. Blankenship and Hall-Montgomery had RBI doubles and Thompson had run-scoring sacrifice fly in the three-run fourth.


Tyson Thompson had a solo home run in the fifth to cut the deficit to 11-4 after five innings.

The Tigers added three runs in the sixth as Dalton had a two-run double and Tyson Thompson a run-scoring single to climb within four, 11-7, after six innings.


Kirkendall’s started the scoring in the seventh for Chapmanville with a sacrifice fly to bring Chapmanville within three, 11-8, with two outs in the seventh.


Down to its last out, Dalton, despite falling in the box on his swing, singled past Hall-Montgomery at first to load the bases for Tyson Thompson, who cleared them with a double off the right field fence tying the game at 11.


Evan Plumley followed with a run-scoring single to plate Thompson with the go-ahead run.

Dalton had four hits and drove in two runs while Butcher added two hits and drove in one for Chapmanville. Kirkendall and Jacob Topping each had one hit and one RBI while Eli Surgoine and Talan Thompson each had one hit for the Tigers.


Blankenship and Thompson each had two hits and drove in three runs for the Hillbillies. Hall-Montgomery had three hits and one RBI. Dickerson and Vance each had one hit and one RBI and Miller one RBI for Man, who lost for the second straight game.
