Tigers run away from Warriors, return to state tournament

CHAPMANVILLE Class AA No. 4 Chapmanville scored the last six points of the first half and 17 of the first 18 points in the third quarter to break a first half time and defeat eighth-ranked Wyoming East 58-33 in the Class AA Region 3 co-finals Tuesday night at the Danny Godby Gymnasium.


Wyoming East (15-10) tied the contest at 15 on Cole Lambert’s 3-pointer with 2:29 to play in the first half, but a 23-1 run over the next 7:43 lifted Chapmanville (20-3) to the win and its sixth regional championship in seven years and a berth in the Class AA state tournament.


The Tigers, the third seed in the tournament, will play Region 4 co-champion and sixth seed Ravenswood (19-5) in a quarterfinal contest at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at the Charleston Coliseum and Convention Center.


Sal Dean led three Tigers in double figures with 24 points on 9 of 12 shooting, including 6 of 7 from 3-point range. Zion Blevins recorded a double-double for the Tigers, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds while Devon Workman was 3 of 3 from deep and finished with 13 points.


Chapmanville led 8-6 after one quarter on Dean’s 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Tigers held a 15-12 lead before Lambert’s 3 knotted the score at 15 with 2:29 to play in the first half before closing the quarter on a 6-0 run to take a 21-15 halftime lead.


Dean scored five of the Tigers six points to close the second quarter and scored 11 points in the third quarter as Chapmanville extended its lead to 43-21 after three quarters.


Chapmanville shot 72.7% from the floor, including 4 of 6 from 3-point range, in the third quarter. The Tigers continue their hot shooting in the fourth quarter, knocking down all six attempts from the field.


The Tigers led by as many as 27 points in the fourth quarter and had more offensive rebounds (16) than Wyoming East had total rebounds (15).


Lambert led Wyoming East with 13 points on 5 of 6 shooting. Bryson Huff added nine points, all coming in the second half on three 3-pointers.


Chapmanville knocked down 22 of its 46 shots and was 9 of 19 from 3-point territory. The Tigers had 26 rebounds and dished out 10 assists, seven of which coming from Isaiah Smith.


Wyoming East made 13 of 30 shots from the field and was 4 of 11 from 3-point range. The Warriors committed 14 turnovers and was held to a season-low 33 points.


Chapmanville has defeated Wyoming East in two of the previous three Class AA Region 3 co-finals and will take a six game winning streak into Wednesday morning’s Class AA quarterfinals against Ravenswood.
