WAYNE Brody Dalton’s fourth-quarter touchdown run from 2-yards out rallied Chapmanville to a 26-21 win over the Wayne Pioneers in a Cardinal Conference game last Friday at Pioneer Field.

Chapmanville, ranked 19th in Class AA, snapped a two-game losing streak, winning for the fourth time this season keeping its postseason hopes alive with the win.

The Pioneers took a 21-20 lead on Jaxson Damron’s 2-yard run and Kade Estep’s successful point after kick with 1:00 remaining in the fourth quarter.

Austin Adkins returned the ensuing kickoff 30 yards to set up the Tigers at midfield with 0:50 remaining.

Facing 3rd-and-10 from midfield following two incompletions to start the drive, Dalton completed three consecutive passes, the first a 12-yard gain to Jacob Topping and the last two, a 12-yard and 14-yard completion to Adam Mullins to move the ball to the Pioneer 12.

Kohl Farmer gained 10 yards moving the ball to the Pioneer 2 and following a Tigers timeout, Dalton ran in from 2-yards out with 0:09 remaining.

Wayne tried a number of laterals on the ensuing kickoff, but Charles Stallard recovered the loose pigskin as Chapmanville won for the first time at Wayne since defeating the Pioneers 19-18 in overtime on Sept. 20, 1991.

Dalton’s second touchdown capped a fourth quarter that featured one tie and four lead changes in the final 8:53.

For the game, Dalton rushed for 57 yards on 10 carries and completed 14 of 25 passes for 188 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Braylon Murdock hauled in a 2-yard touchdown pass from Josh Dingess with 0:33 remaining in the first quarter for a 6-0 Wayne lead.

Murdock’s touchdown reception would be the only points of the first half as the Pioneers used a steady ground game to keep the Chapmanville offense on the sidelines for the majority of the first half.

The Tigers ran just 20 plays in the first half and gained just 81 yards in total offense in the first two quarters. Eight of the 20 plays and 63 of the 81 total yards came on the Tigers final drive of the first half that started at their own 33 and ended at the Pioneer 4 as time expired.

Adkins hauled in a 5-yard pass from Dalton to get the Tigers on the board in the third quarter. Jacob Ferrell’s extra point put the Tigers up 7-6 with 11:05 to play.

Farmer, who led Chapmanville with 81 yards on 13 carries, ran in from 12 yards with 6:08 remaining in the third to give Chapmanville a 14-6 lead after Ferrell’s extra point.

Damron scored the first of his two touchdowns with 8:53 remaining in the fourth quarter as the junior running back outraced the Tigers defense for a 57-yard touchdown. Murdock hauled in a reception from Dingess on the two-point try to tie the contest at 14-all.

Dalton answered Damron’s touchdown run with a 21-yard touchdown of his own to give Chapmanville a 20-14 lead with 6:21 remaining.

Damron finished the game with 226 yards on 24 carries and two touchdowns for Wayne. Dingess completed 4 of 9 passes for 13 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Topping led Chapmanville in receptions catching five passes for 61 yards while Mullins caught four balls for a team high 72 yards and Adkins hauled in three catches for 38 yards and one touchdown.

Wayne lost its second consecutive game and saw its record drop to 3-5. The Pioneers are back in action Friday night hosting Sissonville.

Chapmanville will look to continue its climb in the Class AA rankings Friday night when they host county rival and ninth-ranked Logan at Barker Stadium.
