Tigers scratch out 15, claw Wildcats, 9-1, in AAA Region 4 tournament opener

CHAPMANVILLE   Fourth-seeded Chapmanville tied a season high with 15 hits as the Tigers opened Class AAA Region 4 tournament play with a 9-1 win over the Nitro Wildcats Monday evening at Ted Ellis Field.


The top four hitters in the Chapmanville lineup combined to go 10-for-16 with five RBIs and six runs scored. Gunner Lucas and Jacob Vance each went 3-for-4 and Eli Pridemore and Andrew Topping both went 2-for-4.


Vance scored three times and drove in one with Lucas and Pridemore driving in two runs as Chapmanville (9-15) advances to face top seed Point Pleasant Wednesday evening. Nitro (6-19) will face the loser on Thursday in an elimination contest.


Topping allowed one run on five hits and struck out one in 6 2/3 innings for Chapmanville, who had lost three games to Nitro during the regular season.


Brackston Kirk had two hits, Kaleb Burford and Peyton Dingess each had one hit and one RBI, Robert Cook stole three bases and Braylon Moore had an RBI for the Tigers.


Nitro starting pitcher Wyatt Thomas allowed seven runs on 12 hits and struck out five in four innings.


Jonathan Clark had one hit and one RBI for the Wildcats. Sam Smith, Jake Snyder, Thomas and Brody Whitman each had one hit.
