Tigers secure top seed in sectional tournament with Senior Night victory over Miners

CHAPMANVILLE Chapmanville secured the top seed in the Class AA Region 3 Section 2 tournament Saturday night with a 78-51 win over the Mingo Central Miners at the Danny Godby Gymnasium.


Chapmanville, ranked fourth in Class AA, defeated Mingo Central 66-55 on Dec. 13 at Mingo Central High School and will host the sectional championship on Friday March 3 against either Mingo Central or Liberty (Raleigh).


Five seniors combined to score 40 points for Chapmanville led by Sal Dean's 22. Devon Workman added nine points, Isaiah Smith six, Tucker Adkins three and Landon Tomblin two points to round out the senior scoring for the Tigers on Senior Night.


Dean scored 12 of his game-high 22 points in the opening quarter. Dean knocked down two 3-pointers in the opening frame that featured four lead changes and four ties. Ethan Thomason's 3 from the left corner tied the contest at 11 with 2:33 remaining.


Dean's first 3-pointer from the right wing with 1:05 to play capped a 9-0 Chapmanville run giving the Tigers a 20-11 lead with 1:05 to play in the first quarter. The Tigers led 23-16 after one quarter and stretched their lead to 14 points, 32-18, in the second quarter.


The Miners were able to draw within 11 points but could get no closer as Chapmanville led 37-24 at halftime.


Mingo Central was able to keep the deficit within 11-13 points during the third quarter and trailed Chapmanville 54-41 after the three quarters of play, however, Chapmanville put the game away with a 17-4 run to start the fourth quarter.


Jake Cline led Mingo Central with 15 points. Malaki Sheppard had 10 points while Matt Hatfield and Thomason finished with eight points each for the Miners.


Zion Blevins had 19 points, Eli Smith 10 and Sam Miller seven for the Tigers.


Mingo Central (9-13) has lost four of its last six games to close the regular season and will face Liberty (Raleigh) in next week's Class AA Region 3 Section 2 tournament opener.


Chapmanville (16-3) has won its last two games. The Tigers can wrap up the Cardinal Conference Tuesday night with a win at Sissonville and will close out the regular season Wednesday night at home against Wyoming East.
