Tigers use fourth quarter run to pull away from Generals

CHAPMANVILLE   After trailing for most of the second half, Class AA No. 5 Chapmanville closed the game on a 20-5 run to pull away and defeat Winfield 56-47 Friday night at the Danny Godby Gymnasium.

 

The Tigers trailed 42-36 after Drew Dillard’s fifth of six 3-pointers with 6:51 to play in the fourth quarter.

 

Chapmanville scored 12 consecutive points over the next 3:39, and took the lead, 43-42, for good when Zion Blevins made a pair of free throws with 3:12 remaining.

 

Dillard knocked down his sixth 3-pointer with 2:10 remaining to bring the Generals to within three points, 48-45, but a Blevins steal and two-hand slam put the Tigers up 50-45 with 1:27 to play.

 

Blevins’ jam was the beginning of an 8-2 run for Chapmanville, who won for the eighth time in its last nine games, to improve to 11-6.

 

Blevins finished with 18 points, Joey Gollihue made four 3-pointers and had 17 and Cam Blevins 10 for the Tigers.

 

Dillard scored a game-high 24 points, including all six 3-pointers for the Generals. Jayce Miller had eight and Toby Laughery finished with six points for Winfield, who has lost six of its last eight game and feel to 4-10 on the year.

 

Winfield never lead in the opening quarter, trailing 12-10 after one, and 17-12 in the second quarter before going on an 8-0 run to take a 20-17 lead with 3:35 to play after Dillard’s 3-pointer.

 

Blevins hit a 3 with 0:47 remaining to give Chapmanville a 27-24 lead capping an 8-2 run late in the first half. Chapmanville led 27-25 at halftime, but the Generals started the third quarter on a 10-0 run and led 35-27 after a jumper from Dillard.

 

Dillard scored eight of the Generals 10 points in the quarter’s first 4:25 of the third.

 

Blevins knocked down a pair of free throws with 3:11 to play for Chapmanville’s first points of the third, and Benji Adkins scored with 2:33 remaining for the Tigers first field goal of the quarter. The Tigers trailed 37-36 after three quarters when Gollihue beat the third quarter buzzer with a 3-pointer to finish a 9-2 Tigers run.
