WAYNE It was a game that was closer than many might have expected, and one that Class AAA No. 1 Wayne had to fight their way back into, but in the end, it was the Lady Pioneers surviving to improve their record to 11-0 to start the season.
Logan, ranked 10th in AAA, went into Thursday night's game with a 7-7 record against one of the toughest schedules in the state of West Virginia regardless of classification.
The reigning Class AAA champion Lady Wildcats made 6 of their first 8 3-pointer attempts in the first quarter and led by as many as 10 points on three occasions in the first half, the last coming on a Halle Crouse triple with 7:52 to play in the first half.
Autumn Adkins hit four of the Lady Wildcats six 3-pointers but was held scoreless for the remaining three quarters as the Laneigh Brooks scored a game-high 18 points to lead Wayne to a 47-39 come-from-behind win over Logan Thursday night at Pioneer Gymnasium.
Adkins was a perfect 4 for 4 from 3 in the opening quarter and helped Logan jump out to a 20-13 lead. The Lady Wildcats hit eight 3-pointers in the first half and led 26-19 on Addyson Amick's 3 with 3:10 to play in the first half.
The Lady Pioneers went on an 9-1 run to end the half and led 28-27 on Mikayla Stacy's basket with 0:46 remaining in the first half.
Logan hit two 3-pointers in the third quarter, the final one from Natalie Blankenship to beat the third quarter clock and send the game to the fourth quarter tied at 35.
It would be the last 3 that Logan would make as Wayne outscored its sectional rival, 12-4, in the fourth quarter to pull away for the win.
Brooke Adkins added 13 points and Stacy had eight for the Lady Pioneers (11-0, 5-0 Cardinal Conference).
Blankenship led Logan (7-8, 4-3) with 17 points to join Adkins in double figures.
Logan returns to action Monday when they host Scott.
