I encourage all citizens to get a REAL ID, ensuring they are travel ready.” said Everett Frazier, commissioner of the West Virginia DMV. “You never know when an emergency will arise requiring you to fly. The May 7th deadline is quickly approaching.”

CHARLESTON Tomorrow is the deadline for West Virginia residents to obtain a REAL ID if they plan to use a state-issued license to board domestic flights or enter certain federal buildings.

The REAL ID is part of a federal security law passed in 2005 and is marked by a gold star in the upper right-hand corner of a driver's license. Although it is not mandatory, the West Virginia Division of Motor Vehicles is encouraging residents to get one in case it is needed for travel or access to government facilities.

To receive a REAL ID, individuals must visit a DMV office in person and bring a social security card, either a birth certificate or passport, their current driver's license, and two proofs of residency. REAL IDs cannot be issued online, but they can be renewed online in the future.

DMV officials noted that most locations have an average wait time of 30 minutes or less, but visits may take longer this week as more people make last-minute appointments.

A U.S. passport can still serve as a valid form of identification for flying. The cost to obtain a REAL ID is $38 in West Virginia – $10 more than a standard license.

Officials at West Virginia International Yeager Airport have said travelers without a REAL ID will still be able to board flights during the phase-in period but may face additional screening at TSA checkpoints.
