LOGAN Three players scored in double figures as sixth-ranked Logan defeated Ripley 50-33 in the Class AAA Region IV championship Wednesday night at the Willie Akers Arena.
Julius Clancy led the way with a game-high 17 points for Logan, whose trophy case continues to grow this season.
Just five days after winning its 63rd sectional championship in school history, the Wildcats claimed their 34th regional championship and with it a 39th state tournament berth.
The win was also Logan's eighth straight, which improved them to 16-9 and earned them the fifth seed in next week's West Virginia Secondary School Activities Commission Class AAA boys basketball state tournament.
Logan will face fourth-seeded East Fairmont in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night at 9 p.m. at the Charleston Coliseum & Convention Center.
McCormick Ilderton scored 13 points and Ivan Miller had 10 as the Wildcats held their seventh straight opponent to 50 points or less. Four of the last opponents have been held to 38 points of less including this postseason.
In three postseason games, Logan has not allowed the opposition to score more than 38 points and is allowing just 35.3 points a contest.
That trend continued Wednesday night as Logan held Ripley to a season-low 33 points.
Matthew Stellato led the Vikings with 12 points. Connor Casto had nine and Blake Justice six.
Ripley trailed by 18 at halftime and closed to within 10 points, 35-25, in the third quarter but could never get within 13 points the rest of the way.
The Vikings, who beat Logan in last year's Region IV championship, finished the year with a 11-14 record.
