Wildcats sweep Skyhawks

MADISON   Julius Clancy and McCormick Ilderton combined for 37 points in Class AAA No. 9 Logan’s 65-56 victory over sectional rival Scott on Friday night at the Hawks Nest.

 

Clancy led Logan with 21 points and Ilderton added 16 points. Ivan Miller had nine and Cole Blankenship and Zayden Sherod each had eight points for Logan (7-7).

 

Owen Adkins finished with a game-high 22 points to lead Scott. Louden White had 10 points and Colin Williamson finished with nine points.

 

Logan trailed 17-16 after one quarter, and 21-18 following Jax McCarty’s basket with 5:47 to play before the break.

 

Matt Hatfield even the score at 21 with his 3-pointer with 5:14 remaining to spark a 13-0 run and Zayden Sherod put Logan ahead for good, 23-21, with a pair of free throws with 4:29 left in the first half.

 

Logan would hold Scott scoreless 3:54 of the second quarter before Cole Elkins ended the scoring drought with a basket to bring the Skyhawks within eight points, 31-23, with 1:53 to play in the half.

 

Ilderton was fouled with 4.7 seconds remaining in the first half. Ilderton made the first free throw, missed the second, secured the offensive rebound despite Logan not employing anyone on the free throw line and laid it back in just before the first half buzzer sounded capping a 18-2 run that gave Logan a 36-23 halftime lead.

 

Logan started the third quarter on a 10-2 to take its largest lead, 46-25, following a pair of free throws from Sherod with 4:38 to play in the third quarter.

 

Scott (5-11) closed the quarter on a 13-6 run to close the deficit to 14 after three quarters and closed the gap to nine points on two occasions in the fourth quarter but could get no closer.  

 

Logan won the first meetings between the two teams, 74-42, on January 23 at Logan.

 

Logan, which has won three of its last four games, improved to 4-0 against Class AAA Region 4 Section 2 opponents.

 

Scott, who has lost six of its last seven, fell to 2-3 against sectional opponents and has lost its last three in the section.
