WYOMING COUNTY, WV The West Virginia Division of Highways awarded a $72.5 million contract to build a three-mile connector road between Pineville and Twin Falls State Park, marking another step forward for the Coalfields Expressway project.

Triton Construction Inc. received the contract following a bid letting in September, with the award finalized last week. The project includes a half-mile link to Twin Falls State Park and three miles of new two-lane roadway connecting Pineville to Cabin Creek Road.

A 14-mile segment from Sophia to Mullens is already open, and construction continues on another 5-mile stretch from Welch to WV 16.

The Coalfields Expressway, also known as U.S. 121, will eventually run from Beckley to Pound, Virginia, meanwhile passing through Raleigh, Wyoming, and McDowell counties. About 60 of the 110 planned miles of roadway will travel through southern West Virginia.
