The announcement out of Boone County is just the latest in a wave of similar announcements across the Mountain State. In Mingo County, Dingess Elementary School is next up for consideration on the permanent chopping block, while Raleigh County education officials meet this coming Tuesday to discuss the possible closure and consolidation of Mabscott Elementary.

Although Governor Patrick Morrisey issued an executive order earlier this year seeking to allow religious exemptions for required school vaccinations, that policy has not taken effect. The order remains on hold while the West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals considers a legal challenge.

Raleigh County education officials plan to discuss the possible closure and consolidation of Mabscott Elementary School during their July 28 meeting, the announcement coming just days after confirmation that Dingess Elementary in Mingo County is next up on the permanent chopping block.

It remains unknown at this time where students of Dingess Elementary will go following the planned closure. Officials have also not confirmed any specific reasoning behind the decision.

The West Virginia Department of Human Services says applications will be accepted through August 15, or until available funding is exhausted. Families can apply online or request a paper application through their local Department of Human Services office.

In Martin County, Kentucky, a new elementary school currently under construction will consolidate students from Inez and Warfield.
