Barboursville Little League captures 8-9-10 Softball State Championship, mercy rules Chapmanville, 10-0

SOUTH CHARLESTON The Barboursville Little League was simply
dominant in the 8-9-10 West Virginia Little League Softball State Tournament,
hitting and pitching its way to state championship Wednesday afternoon.
Raegan Foster tossed a two-hit shutout in the circle, Jaylee Botts drove in
three runs and Scarlett Marcum and Winnie Nibert each drove in two runs as
Barboursville defeated Chapmanville 10-0 in five innings at Little Creek Park
to secure its spot in the Tournament of Champions July 30 in Clarksville,
Tennessee.
In five tournament games, Barboursville outscored the opposition 68-2 and
mercy ruled four of the five opponents on its way to a dominating state
championship.
Barboursville opened tournament play with a pair of mercy rule victories
defeating Craigsville 25-0 in three innings and Moorefield 15-0 in four innings.
Logan proved to the be the toughest challenge for Barboursville but
Barboursville prevailed 7-2 to win the Herd bracket and clinch a berth in the
state semifinals where they defeated South Berkeley 11-0 in five innings.
Foster struck out 10 and walked three Wednesday and was nearly unhittable
in the circle in five tournament games allowing just four hits, two each to
Logan and Chapmanville, tossing two no hitters and one perfect game and 46
hitters in 22 innings pitched.
At the plate Wednesday, Botts cleared the bases with a three-run triple and
Marcum and Nibert both hit two-run inside the park home runs. Nibert’s home
run in the fifth inning brought home the final two runs evoking the 10-run
mercy rule and setting off a Barboursville celebration.
Harper Westcott had one hit and one RBI and Maylie Rowe had one hit for
Barboursville.
It wasn’t the ending that Chapmanville had hoped for, but it was the first ever
state championship appearance for Chapmanville Little League in softball and
the loss denied Logan County of a third Little League softball state
championship this season.
Aubrey Anderson and Noella Farley each had one hit for Chapmanville.
Anderson led of the game with a single, but Chapmanville couldn’t muster up
enough offense and didn’t get another hit until Farley singled with two outs in
the fifth inning.
Charity Blankenship allowed 10 runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings and struck
out 11, walked five and hit three batters.
Chapmanville won the Mountaineer bracket with a pair of wins over Trap Hill,
10-2, and South Berkeley, 5-0, before defeating Logan, 5-4, in Tuesday’s
state semifinals to advance to the championship.
Blankenship tossed a no-hitter against South Berkeley and struck out 59
hitters while allowing just eight hits in 22 2/3 innings pitched in four
tournament games.
